OUR WATER QUALITY ANALYZERS ARE EASY TO MAINTAIN AND REDUCE OPERATIONAL COSTS.
Do you have any of these concerns?:
MAINTENANCE
“We need to run some tests for cyanide levels at a mining site in a remote area for a short time and are looking for a unit that is easy to set up and can be maintained by the site electrician. What is possible?”
The B+L Compact Colorimeter is probably the ideal unit for this task. Available as a portable unit, it can be taken to site and setup where it’s needed – all it needs is power and a pressure free water sample (the unit can handle up to two separate samples). The instrument comes in a case, so can be left where it might get wet from time to time and supplies of reagent can be positioned alongside the unit in a convenient spot. All that is required from local employees is to replenish reagent supplies from time to time.
On unmanned sites, the analyzer can run unattended for weeks at a time and status reviewed through a variety of connection options, including a built-in GPRS modem for cellular connection to home base.
MEASURING NITRATE LEVELS
“We operate a water treatment plant in a small town taking water from the river that runs through the town center. When there are heavy storms upstream, nitrate levels in the raw water coming into the plant can spike and our Ion Exchange System can become overwhelmed (it operates on a timed regen basis). Can we measure nitrate levels in our treated water from the ion exchange columns?”
Nitrate measurement is no problem and can be monitored online using the standard NED method with a B+L Colorimeter. Alarms can be set around the measured nitrate level to alert operators of increasing nitrate levels in the water coming out of the ion exchangers, prompting switch over and manual regen as needed.
REAGENTS
“Why do I need reagents for my B+L PowerMon Analyzer? Isn’t there an online instrument available that can make the same measurement dry?”
PowerMon analyzers take a standard laboratory test or assay method and automate it so it can run continuously in an at-line mode. The level of most water contaminants (like metals, etc.) cannot be measured without some sort of chemical reaction – for instance, silicate is found by reacting it with molybdate and acid and the ensuing reaction causes the water to turn blue; the deeper the blue color, the more silicate there is in the sampled stream.
In some cases, physical measurements like conductivity or pH can be correlated to other measurements – sodium concentration, for instance, but these measurements can be greatly affected by the introduction of other substances as well, so care must be taken that the sample is always the same makeup.
In most cases, water quality analyzers will provide continuous lab quality measurements without the time lag or overhead of maintaining a manual sampling and testing regime for operation purposes, saving both cost and improving efficiency.
MEASURING MULTIPLE PARAMETERS
“Are B+L analyzers dedicated to just one parameter? Do they have the capability to measure additional parameters/species in one unit?”
B+L make a Combi analyzer that, depending upon the analyses needed, can provide multiple outputs – for instance, Nitrate and Phosphate levels can be provided in a Combi unit. In addition, it’s possible to include other parameters such as pH, conductivity or an ISE in the measurement to provide additional points of measurement from the unit. These additional points can be calibrated separately and are available over the networked communications or through analog outputs.
It’s very convenient to include extra parameters in the analyzer as it dramatically saves on sample handling and wiring.

Industrial Applications
Drinking Water
- Ensure quality and disinfection levels
- Meet compliance requirements
- Measure metals levels – Al, Fe, Mn
- Nitrates
- Monitor chlorination levels
- Hardness levels
- APHA/Hazen/PtCo Color
Clean drinking water is a priority for the world. In the developed world, we take for granted the availability of clean potable water for our everyday use. What we don’t see behind the scenes is the effort that goes into ensuring our water supplies are safe and uninterrupted. Bran+Luebbe online analyzers can help ensure water delivered to distribution networks meets the highest possible standards.
Oil & Gas
- Produced water – many different substances can be measured before discharge
- Injection water
- Steam plant
- Refinery Boiler Water
Produced water is an ever-present part of oil recovery and production. Separated from the raw crude oil, produced water can contain a wide variety of substances, some benign and some not so friendly. Before discharge back to the environment, produced water must be thoroughly cleaned and all traces of these substances removed. The installation of Bran+Luebbe analyzers can help monitor outflows to ensure compliance to discharge limits is met and prevent costly fines and clean up when problems do occur.
Refineries use a lot of steam in processing units. To keep heat exchangers and boilers operating at peak efficiency, silicates and other contaminants in the water used must be kept to an absolute minimum to prevent internal scaling of critical equipment. Scaling reduces efficiency and increases operating and maintenance costs. B+L analyzers provide 24/7 monitoring of boiler feed water to keep the water quality right.
Power Plants
- Maintain boiler feed water at optimum levels
- Silicates, PO4, iron, sodium, chlorides
- Prevent scaling
- Improve efficiency
- pH
- Total hardness
- Discharge water
The prevention of scaling in power plant boilers is one of the most important actions to be taken in day to day operations for a power plant to run at peak performance. Proper attention to scale build-up can save literally millions of dollars for power plant owners and operators
With increased scrutiny on environmental pollution, it’s important to monitor plant discharge. Bran+Luebbe provides a battery of analyzers to ensure discharge remains in compliance—benefitting plant and environment alike!
Wastewater
- Discharge to rivers and water courses
- Demonstrate discharge limit compliance
- COD/BOD
- Toxic materials
- NO3, PO4, NH4 levels
- Consent parameter monitoring
Wastewater streams contain a wide variety of materials that must be controlled and removed before treated water is discharged to the environment. Even small amounts of toxic substances in plant influent can create havoc in the wastewater treatment process. Bran+Luebbe filtration systems can provide clean samples to an analyzer from streams with heavy suspended solids and give you the measurements you need to fully control and operate your plant.
